Learn adventure tourism in one of the best outdoor playgrounds in the world and have an exciting career guiding throughout New Zealand and overseas.
The diverse wilderness areas of the Top of the South (Te Tau Ihu) and beyond will become your stunning outdoor classroom. NMIT's Nelson's Campus is located just a short distance from three awesome national parks, rivers, ski fields and caves, and are renowned throughout the world by adventurers.
Working closely with local adventure operators, you will gain the skills and experience to enter and work in the adventure tourism industry.
You will develop your skills in the following disciplines:
The programme is structured into eight 15-credit courses and is best studied full-time. A part-time block course option is also available. A combination of on-campus classes and overnight trips make up this mostly practical programme.
We get started early in the year to make the most of the summer weather! Courses are applied and practical in nature and you can expect at least 80% of your learning to take place in the outdoors.
Pathway from the Certificate in Adventure Tourism and Guiding (Level 4)(external link) and complete the Diploma in Adventure Tourism and Guiding (Level 5) in your second year.

Please note that entry directly onto this programme will require you to present evidence demonstrating you have the skills and knowledge that correspond to the learning in the Certificate programme.
Build upon the skills gained in your first year and go on to obtain industry tickets in most of the outdoor disciplines taught once you have graduated. You'll have everything you need to be begin your career as a professional Adventure Tourism guide.
