NMIT Accounting student lands internship at “Big Four” firm

Matt Beach has had an interest in business and finance for as long as he can remember, but he believed he didn’t have “the brains for it”.

Since taking the plunge and studying business at NMIT, that has all changed. He’s secured a part-time position at a Nelson accounting business and has been awarded a coveted internship at Deloitte, one of the world’s “Big 4” accounting firms.

And Matt’s just getting started. “I do have some pretty ambitious future goals,” he says.

Matt started at NMIT with the one year New Zealand Diploma in Business (Accounting), which provides a comprehensive introduction to accounting and its role in business.

“It was a great introduction into the world of business without getting too bogged down in the details, which I really liked,” Matt says.

He says the tutors were “amazing” and have a genuine interest in seeing students succeed.

“Every tutor I had went above and beyond to help wherever possible, which as a new student, coming back into study as an adult, was a great comfort.

“They all have great real-world experience and use that experience in their teaching rather than just explaining subject matter based on text books and theories.”

After completing the Diploma, Matt enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce, doing a double major in Accounting and Management.

The Bachelor programme provides more advanced business knowledge and hands-on skills through a variety of applied learning techniques that prepare graduates for a career in Accounting, Management or Marketing.

Both the Diploma and Bachelor programmes are available on campus in Nelson and Marlborough with part-time study options available and intakes in February and July. The Diploma, which constitutes the first year of the Degree, can also be studied online.

At the start of the year, Matt landed a part-time job with a local firm, Pretty Accounting, where he can apply what he’s learning at NMIT.

“Being able to apply what I’m learning in the real world has been invaluable and really helps me to understand some of the more challenging concepts of accounting and taxation.”

He has also secured an internship at Deloitte in Christchurch at the end of the year, which he’s “extremely excited” about.

“All going well the internship could lead into a graduate position at the end of my degree, which would be a dream come true.”
