Two recent NMIT graduates pay tribute to their employers.
Let the challenge begin!
School teams, under the guidance of NMIT mechanical engineering tutors, are ready to start building an electric powered vehicle.
Learners are given an EVolocity kit which contains the basics needed to make a fully functional electric vehicle. The challenge is to make the fastest, most aerodynamic vehicle possible.
At the end of the year the students take their vehicles to the race track and put it through its paces. Winners from each regional event go on to a national final.
Students on the programme spend one day a week in the NMIT workshops and classrooms doing theory and practical learning, and two days in a work placement.
The partnership opens the door to careers in mechanical engineering, electronics, programming and clean tech. It also provides a pathway to the Certificate in Mechanical Engineering, Level 3, and prepares them for apprenticeships and entry level positions in the automotive field.
EVolocity team member, Claudia Reynolds says past students from the EVolocity programme have gone on to careers in automotive engineering, further study or directly in to employment.
“The success of our alumni really shows this is a great gateway programme for young people who want to find out if this industry excites them,” says Claudia.
The 2022 EVolocity design workshop is being launched at NMIT on 11 April at the NMIT Nelson Campus. It will also be online for those who are unable to attend.
The evening will involve lots of practical activities.
